| il n'est pas mis en valeur par la photo, c'est bete on ne voit pas la tete, dommage car les toupets ont l'air superbe on est quand meme assez loin de notre standard du moins dans le type et la forme, port trop enlevé et sans doute la masse aussi |

- Shawnee Oklahoma, Dec 13-14, 92nd Annual Oklahoma State Poultry Show hosted by the Oklahoma Poultry Federation. There were 2800 total birds. Entries always close after this number is met so that no birds will have to be double decked. The Shawnee show hosted the 2008 National Meets for the American Silkie Bantam Club and American Sumatra Association. This was the best run show I have seen to date. Even the entry forms were well done, simple and very organized. I had been to the Expo center in Shawnee many times over the last 20 years to sell horses at some of their big stock horse sales but this was the first time I had attended the annual poultry show. I quickly found out this is one of those MUST attend shows if you live anywhere in the Central USA. There were exhibitors present from 17 states with some driving from as far away as Arizona, Florida and Michigan. If Shawnee hosts the APA or ABA Nationals in the future, as they have done before, it would be an excellent location for a future Araucana National.
A lot of seemingly little things made for a very successful show experience. As an example . . . I think Call Ducks are about as cute as they can be, but they ARE big noise makers. At the Shawnee show, the ducks had their own adjacent show room which they shared with geese and turkeys. They could quack and make noise all they wanted to and it was not heard in the main show hall. There was also a special indoor area just for the sale birds. A short walk from the main show hall, which was huge, and you were at the snack bar. The food was good and there was a good variety available. Everything, except parking, is indoors and attached to the main show hall. The snack bar also had a dining room with tables and chairs for a quiet break from the show. A little further past the snack bar was a pigeon show (I did not make it down there but it looked busy). By the way, the sale birds and pigeons were NOT counted in the total entries as has been reportedly done at some recent shows to boost their final count.
Some of the other other things I liked about this show . . . It had close and easy access to vehicles for parking and unloading. The lighting was great - no dark spots or corners. There was even a rack of metal folding chairs put out for any exhibitors that did not bring their own! I have not seen that one before. I guess to sum it up, every effort was made by the Oklahoma club to make the show as enjoyable as possible for exhibitors. Thank you to Steve Jones, show secretary, and all of the OSPF club members who helped out.
I took 8 Araucana to this show (4 large fowl and 4 bantams) and was once again the only Araucana exhibitor. Jim Sallee was the AOSB class judge. My white pullet, Leia, was Best of Breed again. I also showed a black cockerel, Shades, who I showed as an AOV since he had a bit of red color bleed through. He placed 1st and Best of Variety. I showed my color challenged blue pullet, Root Beer, as an AOV also, she was 1st and Best of Variety. And my Brown Red pullet, Mattie was 1st and Reserve of Variety in a one bird class. I guess Mr. Sallee was letting me know she was barely a brown red (her hackle was mostly black).
If I remember correctly there were 6 breeds represented in the AOSB Class, and there were a total of 60 birds. An excellent group of BBRed Cubalyas brought by Twisted Feather farms produced the pullet that was the Reserve AOSB winner. This was the same pullet that went Champion AOSB at the big Tulsa show . The AOSB Championship went to one of the 20 Sumatras that showed up for their National Meet. There were even 6 Naked Necks/Turkens. You don’t see those too often. The balance of the class was a large group of really nice Ameraucanas brought by exhibitors, Michael Meunks, MO (Araucana Club member) and Paul and Angela Smith, TX. I had a good time visiting with Michael and Paul and we had some good discussions on subjects like egg color, Araucana fertility, tufting, and the blue variety/lacing. Michael’s gorgeous White hen was Best of Breed Ameraucana.
The AOSB class was judged first (unusual) and by the time they got to the AOCCL class and judged my Bantams (4 PM) I had run out of steam and did not get a count on the number in the class but there were many rows of AOCCL and each row had 40 birds in it. The Champion AOCCL when to a Cornish. I had a different judge for the Bantams and my White Pullet, Sissy, got her first Best of Breed. Reserve of Breed went to my Black pullet, Jasmine. I also showed my Golden Cockerel and my Buff pullet to first place wins.
I hope this is not too long, but I wanted to convey that I was impressed with the show and how well it was run. I was very happy with how my birds looked and showed themselves. And, I had a great time - you can’t ask for more than that. Next year I am hoping to return to Shawnee with more, and better, birds.

Shawnee, Oklahoma main show hall. If you look to the far end of the hall, you can see the people at the last row of cages and their heads are no bigger than a pencil mark. There were three more rows of cages behind me when I took this picture. It is a BIG Place with several more adjacent 'barns' this same size. And it's warm. :) The wind was cold and howling outside. ________ _________ ________ _________ ________ _________ ________ _________ Adhérez au Bantam Club Français, Club existant depuis 1899 !
